Union Pacific’s Villa Grove Sub runs from the big city of Chicago to the small town of Villa Grove. It is a busy double-track main, with a lot of traffic by CSX (trackage rights) and UP. This North-South line crosses many of the busy East-West mainlines in the Chicago area. We’ll see Canadian National, Indiana Harbor Belt and Norfolk Southern, all crossing at grade.

IHB still maintains a tower at Dolton. Join us along the former Chicago and Eastern Illinois as we see UP and CSX share this busy double track main.

There are a bunch of locations on today’s CSX & Union Pacific like CP 1916 junction & yard near Dolton, Milepost 16.6 at Dolton Yard, Thornton Junction at milepost 20.1, Glenwood, Jay tower junction at milepost 27 in Chicago Heights, the south side of Chicago heights, Sauk Trail at milepost 27.9, Crete, Beecher at MP 35.8 with a Mopac caboose on display, Grant Park, Momence at MP 49.6 with a since been sold UP C40-8 number 9043 in charge on one scene, Pence at MP 49.7 with NS C40-8 or 9 numbers 8886 & 8743 that had since been either rebuilt or sold on one scene, Kankakee River Bridge where a family is going for a swim, MP 56, St. Anne at MP 60.1, Papineau, Pittwood, Martinton, Watseka near MP 77, Woodland at MP 82, & ends at Woodland Junction in MP 82.4 where CSX goes to Evansville Indiana, & UP to St. Louis.

Aside from UP & CSX, there are other road names like the Indiana Harbor Belt, Amtrak, BNSF with a Santa Fe Warbonet in charge on one scene, Norfolk Southern, Canadian National, British Columbia Rail, Canadian Pacific, Southern Pacific, Kansas City Southern, HLCX, & the Kankakee, Beaverville, & Southern.

Some of the diesels seen in the program are referenced to some steam survivors: UP 643 is referred to Pennsylvania 643 at Williams Grove, while Indiana Harbor Belt 4012 is referenced to UP Big Boy 4012 at Steamtown in Scranton PA.

In a couple of scenes, UP 5913 & 6587 are hauling an unassembled airplane in pieces.

With neat footage from Peter Crook, Tim Walter did a marvelous job narrating this program.

I thought this was a good video. If I have any complaint, it would be that too much time was devoted to the Chicagoland area, and not enough given to the more rural areas. I would like to have seen some action at Watseka and Villa Grove, IL. All in all, a quality product.

I don’t know what the other reviewer means when he says the trains were speeded up. I experienced nothing like that at all. There is a nice variety of traffic – and a lot of it – with CSX and UP both going into Chicago. The reason for a lower star rating however is the lack of variety in the shots. We see the same three-quarter shot over and over and over. Also, you’ll hear a lot of crossing bells. So, three stars.

This was a great subject of a line rarely covered, but some shot was the same train and it seemed like they sped up the trains so makes for some weird sounds.
