| | Conrail Shared Assets track chart - Post Merger Conrail | | Northern NJ, Southern NJ (& Philadelphia) and Detroit | | | Conrail Shared Assets track chart 184 pages - the Conrail that still exists! | This is what's left of Conrail after CSX and NS took Big Blue apart. When CSX and Norfolk Southern carved up Conrail they were ordered to preserve competition in several regions: Northern New Jersey (New York City Metro), Southern NJ (and Philadelphia) and Detroit. In those areas not only did they have to preserve competition, but Conrail's physical plant could not be easily divided. The solution was three "Shared Asset" areas, where Conrail still exists but now as a terminal railroad owned by both CSX and NS.
As a terminal railroad Conrail runs about 90 miles of track in the Detroit area, about 200 miles in Northern New Jersey and 250 in Southern New Jersey and Philly. Interestingly, Conrail, the terminal railroad, is still headquartered in Philadelphia like predecessors Penn Central and the Pennsylvania Railroad. | | A hard to find track chart. This was issued right at the beginning of the 'new' Conrail, just as the merger was formulated. This track chart and condensed profile includes several maps of each area and major yards as well as the track chart itself. See the contents page above. Also included is a key. This is a photocopy of an original Conrail Railroad document. The scan above is of the main portion of a track chart page (also included is the maintenance program information). The scan below is of one of the maps included. This is 8.5 x 11, double sided, placed in a report cover.
Lines in this track chart are portions of former Conrail trackage. The track chart contents run a full seven pages. Some major lines are: * Lehigh Line, * Penns Grove Secondary, * Detroit Line, * Freehold Secondary, and * Chemical Coast Secondary. |
