Southern Pacific
"Diagrams of Steam Locomotives" - Motive Power Department
Updated to July 1951
Steam Locomotives of the Southern Pacific: from switchers to the streamlined GS class to mighty Cab Forwards like the 4-8-8-2 AC-12 class. 224 total pages with 160 diagrams and 64 pages of indexes.

This diagram book is all steam locomotives. No diesels. No tenders (though there is an 11 page tender index). Lots of steam!
This is a photocopy of an original Southern Pacific Lines Locomotive Diagram Book. The cover (see inset scan above) does not list a date, but the newest revised date on the inside is July 1, 1951. The diagrams themselves date from 1930 to 1950 with revision dates covering everything in between. The final revision date in both the index and on many of the diagrams is 1951. The original diagrams ranged from blueprint to black line and ranged from a 1930 to 1950 printing. Most of the diagrams are easy to read, all are legible, but a few of the oldest are quite faded.

None of the diagrams are marked with build dates or locomotive manufacturers. All have detailed measurements and engineering data for each steam locomotive. Some are marked for SP subsidiary the San Diego and Arizona Eastern. The indexes note locomotive numbers for each class and sub class. Other notes include locomotives on lease. There is a separate index for SD&AE locomotives and another index for SP tenders, although no tender diagrams are included in this diagram book.

Steam Locomotive classes covered in this diagram book:
* Class A (4-4-2), * Class AC (2-8-8-2), * Class AC (4-8-8-2),
* Class AC (2-8-8-4), * Class B (2-8-4), * Class C (2-8-0),

Railfans and rail historians can find a wealth of information here. Trainz and MSTS users, as well as model railroaders, can use the diagrams to make more accurate models of a favorite prototype. Diagrams are three-hole punched and placed in a pressboard binder with a label on the front.
