These two Southern California railroading landmarks draw railfans from around the world seeking to experience the engineering ingenuity, spectacular scenery, and a steady parade of trains. Never was that more true than in 1986 when this program was originally filmed. At that time most trains still had cabooses, Southern Pacific oil cans (the "Tank Train") still ran over Tehachapi, and many Santa Fe and Southern Pacific locomotives sported the short-lived red and yellow "Kodachrome" merger paint scheme. | 
| You could still see pure sets of blue and yellow Santa Fe power, including EMD SD45s, F45s, and FP45s and GE U36Cs and C30-7s. Southern Pacific also ran pure sets of its locomotives, including SD45s and “tunnel motors,” and Amtrak ran the Southwest Chief and the Desert Wind over Cajon with F40PH locomotives. The Santa Fe dispatcher’s office was still located in the San Bernardino depot, and the Mojave depot was still in use.
