Penn Central Freight Car Diagrams
Includes NYC, NH, PRR, CASO, IHB, P&E, P&LE, TOC, B&A, Leased Cars
This is a comprehensive look at Penn Central freight cars. A very useful tool for the freight car historian, or anyone interested in the PC or included and predecessor roads. Most of the book is made up of diagram after diagram after diagram of freight cars.

All diagrams feature dimensional data for the car and most feature additional information such as how many cars are in the series, who the builder is and when (and what railroad) purchased the car. A few note special features of the car or car series such as "perforated steel floor plates" or special equipment such as "Granu-Max Inflatable Slope Sheet System".

Freight car types featured are (from the contents page): 40' Box Cars, 50' Box Cars (single door), 50' Box Cars (double doors), 60' Box Cars, 86' Box Cars, Flat Cars, Multi-Level Cars, Flexi-Van Cars, Special Flat Cars, Gondola Cars, Hopper Cars, Covered Hopper Cars, Stock Cars and Tank Cars. The index shows cars broken down by: Class Number, New York Central number, Canada Southern Number, Indiana Harbor Belt number, Peoria & Eastern number, Pittsburgh & Lake Erie number, GATX Leased Cars, MDT Leased Cars, North American Leased Cars, TTX Leased Cars, Pennsylvania Railroad number, Penn Central number, New Haven number, New York Central Lot Number Index.
This is a photocopy of an original Penn Central Freight Car Directory / Diagram book. 322 pages. 13 index. Pages are 8.5 by 11 inches. Hole-punched, in a report cover, with a label.

About half the pages features two diagrams to a page (see below), the other half feature one diagram on a page. This was put together in 1974 with some pages taken from previous books (those pages are marked 1967 and 1964). Typical for the Penn Central in its final years is how the book is put together... a few diagrams are cut off, a few are light on the page, a very few are difficult to read the printing is so poor. A few pages have information cut off at the top, bottom or sides.

A diagram sample is scanned above, a page with two diagrams is below and below that is another sample diagram. Many folks are using these with Trainz or Microsoft Train Simulator.

RailfanDepot carries a collection of railroad paper both new and collectible.
