New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad Locomotives | This is Nickel Plate Road Locomotive Diagram Book Number 1 - assigned to President Felix S. Hales. Mr. Hales was president of the Nickel Plate from 1955 to 1963. The title page (see scan above) shows this book as assigned to F.S. Hales and updated to 1962. Usually diagrams would be dropped as locomotives were retired. It does not appear that happened in this case as about half of the book is still steam locomotive diagrams - and the Nickel Plate dieselized in 1960. Possibly Mr. Hales kept them out of need, or nostalgia as he came up through the Nickel Plate ranks in Operations. Though marked as updated to 1962, the final locomotives in this book were delivered in 1964 - just prior to the merger that would see the Nickel Plate disappear into the Norfolk and Western. This is truly Nickel Plate history.
